The best things in life are free right? There is an abundance of awesome shilling-free merriment’s to be had on our doorstep, but I’ve compiled a list of my favourite five for your convenience.
- Visit the Musafir
The Musafir is 70-foot traditional wooden boat stationed on the beach, that is currently under construction until it will one day sail the big-wide-world reaching small settlements, developing volunteer projects with local communities. At present it has a small crew that accepts volunteers to help maintain it’s glory; a thought-provoking group of super interesting soul searches, who often host sundowners for the best view of the sunset on the top deck.. Yoga classes and fundraising parties are often held aboard, as well as local art showcases and community gatherings. They rely highly off donations, so although it’s free, if you would be so kind, 200ksh ($2) goes a long way!
- Volleyball with our staff
They play pretty much everyday and they’ll take you down if you’re not careful.
- Chilling
Chill with a book in the chill out room, chill by the pool on a sunbed, chill at the creek on our quiet beach, chill on a sailboat, chill & watch a movie, chill & play guitar, chill with a cold dawa, chill in a tree, chill on a swing, chill with the monkeys… chiiiiillll
- Jam Sessions
Every other Sunday we have the Sunday Sessions, a local band named Chuma Moto perform with their ever fluid & ever-changing line up, invite people to join in, or hand over the stage completely to talented travellers & locals a like. Live music is a little scarce here, we’re trying to make it into a place people feel free to perform. Complete with Bloody Mary’s to ease all of those enjoyable hangovers.
- Bioluminescence
My most favouritestest thing about DR is that you are a five minute walk away from a safe, tranquil beach that you can freely swim in at any time and it’s magic breaths at night – gaze at the stars above whilst swimming through the stars below. There aren’t many places in the world to boast this anomaly. Bioluminescent plankton is a fascinating phenomenon in which the plankton, which are motion activated, light up super bright as you splash or swim in the waters. Watch this awesome documentary on bioluminescent life here. Reasons for this aren’t completely known although most research points to it being a type of defence mechanism to warn off predators in darkness. It’s a true spectacle that never gets old.
